Evaluation: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product

Overall what have I learnt:
  • How to use Photoshop. Although I already knew how to use photoshop from school I have learnt much more about using the different tools such as magnetic lasso, spot healing, how to change the brightness/contrast and the colour balance. On my college magazine you will be able to tell that I didn't really know how to edit photos, the lighting in the room gave the photo a yellowy colour to it and I didn't know how to correct that.
  • I have learnt that the colour scheme of the magazine plays a big part in distinguishing genre and meeting the target audience, for example if you have a red, white and black magazine the genre is most likely to be rock or indie and if you have a really colourful magazine it's probably a pop magazine.
  • I have also learnt that the clothing of the model need to fit the genre as well, my genre is indie so I want the model to be wearing this style of clothing to attract the right audience and readers.
  • I have learnt about serif and sans serif fonts, before I never knew that serif fonts are used for articles because they are easier to read especially when skimming through and sans serif fonts can be used more for the front cover where the fonts will be bolder.

Evaluation: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product

*may want to turn the volume up as you might struggle to hear me*
I had used blogger before at school so I already knew the basics, but I did learn how to add labels to my post so they're easy to find and how to embed codes for prezi and slideshare.

flickr is a way of sharing photographs online, many photographers use it just to store, and keep their photos safe. I had never used flickr before but soon found out that it's really straight forward to use, I used it to talk about media distribution for my evaluation.
I have used Prezi to create interesting, more fun presentations, I have used it a couple of times for my blog including one for the evaluation. Prezi is relatively easy to use however it does take some time to get used to, but the outcome always looks good.
Slideshare is a piece of software which allows you to convert presentations in powerpoint for example into a presentation where you can embed the code to be shown on websites like blogger which we have done. It is really easy to use and navigate around the page.
I used twitter to get some social networking feedback, I already had a twitter account so I knew how to use it. I have put a screenshot of the feedback in a previous post.
The camera I used to take all my photos was my own camera it is a Nikon D300s Digital SLR, it is really easy to use and takes some really good quality photographs.
I used photoshop to create the whole of my magazine, I find it really easy to navigate and much better than InDesign.

I used iPhoto to import all my photographs it is very simple to use, all you have to do is drag and drop.
I used a mac mini to create most of my magazine, and some parts I did at home on my own macbook pro, I already knew how to navigate my way around a mac so I didn't really learn anything new here.
This is a video of myself using photoshop.

Evaluation: How did you attract/address your audience

Evaluation: Who would be the audience for your media product? Why?

Name: Jess
Gender: female
Age: 18
Occupation: Student at college, part time Mcdonalds
Favourite TV show: The big bang theory
Favourite shops: Top shop, river island, new look
Favourite music: Indie
Hobbies: running

I have drawn someone who represents the target audience of my magazine. She is 18 years old, has a part time job so can afford to buy magazines, she likes to look good by shopping at places such as top shop and river island. She loves to listen to indie style music her favourites are Gotye, F.U.N and Ellie Goulding and she enjoys watching typical teenage programmes such as, The Big Bang Theory and New girl. She also loves going out and spending time with her friends and she's constantly using her phone for social networking and texting.

I think she would buy my magazine because she's female and the right age that my magazine aims for. She likes indie music which is the genre of my magazine and her favourite artists are sometimes features in it. She's always on facebook and twitter which is good because my magazine has its own social network pages that she can follow to  keep up to date. She also likes to keep up with all the fashion trends and looks to her music icons for fashion inspirations.

Evaluation: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

This is a front cover of Q magazine and my own front cover, I am going to list the similarities and differences between the main central images. I have used a nikon D300S digital SLR to take my all photographs.

Similarities:

  • Both photos are mid shots. I wanted to used a mid shot on the cover so that the readers could see some of the indie style clothing. Both models are also looking directly at the camera/at the audience.
  • Both models are posing slightly leaning forward, this gives the readers the sense that she is confident, tough, strong and maybe sometimes arrogant.
  • Both models are wearing a small amount of make up, I wanted to keep my model looking natural and not too over the top.
  • Both photos have bright lighting, I wanted to get a natural sunlight feel. I think if my photo was too dark readers might mistake the genre of my magazine.
  • Both photographs use similar facial expressions, they both have a slight smile, maybe more of a smirk which shows that the artists again might be confident and a bit arrogant.
Differences:
  • Q's model has her hands in the shot whereas my model does not.
  • Although both models are wearing a small amount of make up, the model in Q is wearing much more eye make up.
  • The image in Q has a hat covering one of the eyes on the model, this gives a mysterious feel .
  • The photograph in Q fills up more of the page whereas mine is a bit smaller to give more room for coverlines without it looking to crowded.
How have I represented age and gender in my magazine?:
  • My models are young 16 and 17 which fits the target audience but I think I have represented them as being confident like a lot of teenagers are, they're sometimes a bit 'cocky' so they will be able to relate to the artists.
  • They are also natural, I wanted to keep make up down to a minimum, I'm sure most people worry about their looks a lot of the time so I wanted to show the audience that they dont have to wear tones of make up and that no-one is perfect and hopefully they will all relate to this and feel better about themselves.
  • As for gender I think I have represented females as being strong, by having the model lean forward slightly I think it shows that they are strong and confident.
  • I think as a whole she is represented as maybe an un-stereotypical teenager, when a lot of people think 'teenager' they'll think of them wearing tracksuits, going out drinking, committing crimes etc, but I think I have shown people that not all teenagers are like that by dressing my model in more suitable clothing and showing that she is successful and is doing something good with her life rather than what a stereotypical teenager might be doing.
